My final project

Although I struggled A LOT with InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, I thought my 
final result was good. I sort of hated designing in the beginning. However, as I 
continued to work with these programs they got easier to work with. Now I feel like 
I can work with these programs with confidence. I feel like I have really improved 
my skills not only in these programs but with computers as well. I enjoyed this 
class and designing, even when it was frustrating and difficult to work with.

Which Bunny is Which?

We used Adobe Illustrator CS4 to recreate a logo for any company. I chose Playboy, which you might think would be a strange choice but making the logo was fairly simple. Simplicity in this class is not something i'm used to judging from all the trouble I had with InDesign. All I had to make was the head, bunny ears, a bow, a tie, and a white eye that I placed on the head. Then I just had to arrange the features around each other the same way the original logo was. I found Adobe Illustrator fairly easy to use compared to InDesign, which is strange because I thought they were very similar programs.

Recycle Me!


This is the ad created for the bottles can. "Shape a recycling world" draws a parallel to, "Shape a changing world" which is use in the mission statement. Using green in the ad demonstrated how we want to be "green" at Miss Porter's and the use of specific plastic, metal and glass can and bottles makes the ad more personal.
This is the ad created for paper. Again, we used a play on the mission statement, green coloring and specific names and titles of papers, envelopes, boxboard, magazines and newspapers that portray what a Porter's girl might recycle.

Good Ad!


This is my redesign of the bad ad. I changed the alignment, the picture, contrast, and fonts. I used a center alignment, except for the picture and the contact and address information. I tied the colors in the cornucopia to the words. This brought the ad together. The outline is the same color as the cornucopia basket because without it, the ad was a little bland.

InDestructible.


Although I had a lot of trouble recreating this magazine page, I liked the satisfaction of looking at my recreation and saying, "that's something I'm proud of". I had a lot of problems with placing the shapes behind the editor, and making the shapes similar to those on the actual page, but it was finally, finally done. I like to create designs with my hands, making posters, drawing pictures, so it was hard to use a mouse to move things around when all I wanted to do was rip the computer apart and put things in the right place with my hands. In the end though, I enjoyed working with InDesign, even though it was difficult at times.

What I think of design so far...

Although Indesign is difficult (just kidding it's impossible) I think I'll still enjoy designing. Everything is difficult in the beginning, right? Once I get past the technicalities of designing, I'll be able to fully enjoy it, and hopefully design something I'm proud of.

I like the Paramount design because it's right to the point. The stars circling the word "Paramount" make it obvious what company is advertised. In other words, you don't have to search for the product's name. It's clear and simple.

Hello.


This commercial caught my eye several years ago at the Oscars. The fact that I remembered what it was about enough to enter it in my search engine should say a lot about it's impression on me. I haven't seen this commercial recently, yet I still remembered it several years later. I like this commercial because it has a main theme taken from various movies, the theme being "Hello".

Goooooooooooooooal.

This summer I spent a lot of time watching the World Cup. My dad immigrated from Ireland 20 years ago, and practices soccer as his religion. So, as you might have guessed, I didn't actually have much choice in whether or not I would watch. This ad caught my eye not only because it was shown on t.v. every time a match started, but because of the colors and pattern in the colors. The use of green and red, orange and blue really caught my eye. I like how they used colors opposite on the color wheel, this made the design stand out.

Hand Art.


At first glance this ad for AT&T looks computerized, fake. But a second look shows you that the fish and coral are actually hands. I like this ad because it is bright, and a little confusing at first. The coral hands are wrapped around the phone and the fish is pointing directly at it, drawing attention the the phone from every angle.  Notice the word "phone" are never used in the picture. However, it is clear from the cell screen which phone company is being advertised. Also, the line "Works in over 200 countries, like Jamaica" suggests that if you buy this phone you can go on vacation.

Pass It On.





This billboard says a lot. It's simple, neat, and it stands out on a highway. On the left is a picture of a handicapped runner, this brings attention to the board by using bright colors and tension. Then, the writing on the right grabs your attention because of the red words: "Overcoming". I like this ad because it promotes the Foundation for Better Living without overdoing it. It shows they are humble and want to support their cause without plastering the name in every corner.

What I Have Done as a Designer.

My (sort of) career as a designer started at the age of 7. Everyday after school I would jump in the car with my mom and go to her to her work. Now, my mom has been a landscape designer for many years, so I got first hand experience in working with people who want their garden to look a certain way or send a certain message. I helped her design the gardens using transparent paper and a light table, along with helping her plant flowers, prune bushes, and make stone walls.
I have also created many Christmas cards and entered them in school contests, but they never won, much to my disappointment. However, this didn't stop me from sending multiple ones to my aunt and uncle in Ireland.
